Si elle est manifestement une tactique et une violence politiques, il importe d’en déplier les méthodes, les procédures, les temporalités, les instruments et les discours. Comprendre la démolition suppose de se désengager d’une opposition trop nette entre destruction et préservation. Rénover, transformer, désassembler, déconstruire, curer, dépolluer, désimperméabiliser, isoler, ouvrir, réarticuler sont autant de gestes complexes et d’attitudes nuancées.\n\nPar cette pensée dialogique se laisse saisir l’épaisseur idéologique et esthétique de l’acte de détruire. À l’heure où l’architecture doit prendre en charge l’héritage du siècle passé et où la conservation des structures existantes est sans cesse remise en cause malgré les mobilisations des habitant·es et des professionnel·les, comprendre comment détruire permet d’envisager l’acte de défaire l’architecture, de projeter et d’envisager une suite à ce qui existe.\n\nLe mythe libéral de la « destruction créatrice » (2), où l’obsolescence se décrète, suppose une rupture nette entre l’avant et l’après. L’architecture peut démontrer que l’acte de projet consiste moins à innover qu’à produire des imaginaires, à convaincre de la valeur de ce qui persiste et à composer avec ce qui manque. C’est aussi se dégager d’une approche strictement bâtimentaire de la ville pour comprendre l’édifice comme un enchevêtrement de matières, d’histoires et de liens.
