Vendredi – une correspondence surrealiste is one of the most unusual magazines composed by the Belgian surrealists. This handwritten weekly, which was never published, appeared for a little less than two years, from November 11, 1949 to October 5, 1951. In all, more than 100 issues were produced on the initiative of Paul Colinet, in collaboration with René Magritte, Marcel Mariën, Louis Scutenaire, Irène Hamoir, Marcel Broodthaers and Pierre Alechinsky among others. Every Friday, Paul Colinet sent the magazine to his nephew, the draftsman Robert Willems, who was living in the Belgian Congo. This 992-page facsimile provides a unique insight into the complexity of Belgian surrealism. Each issue of Vendredi is a work of art in itself: the beautifully illustrated pages bring together handwritten poems, as well as various writings, short stories, jokes, drawings, collages and newspaper clippings. With an introduction by Xavier Canonne, an inventory and biographies of all participating artists.
