“Work from Underneath” is the first solo exhibition in the United States of the British artist Lubaina Himid (born 1954), winner of the Turner Prize.

A pioneer of the British Black Arts Movement in the 1980s and 1990s, Himid has long been an activist for invisible and marginalized histories. Over the past three decades, Himid’s works in drawing, painting, sculpture and textiles have been critical of the consequences of colonialism and questioned the invisibility of people of color in art and the media.

Contributors to the catalog: art historian Jessica Bell Brown, poet and theorist Fred Moten and an interview with the artist by Natalie Bell, Associate Curator of the New Museum
