  • Xavier Corberó (1935-2017) is one of the leading Spanish artists of the last century. His sculptures in rough stone, marble and bronze gave shape to the ideas that ran through a circle of contemporary surrealist artists, including Salvador Dalí, Marcel Duchamp, Max Ernst and Joan Miró, but with pieces that were his own. His works are widely and internationally celebrated in institutions such as the V&A in London and the Met in New York, but perhaps his greatest work of art is to be found in the suburbs of Barcelona, in the form of the house he built for himself over five decades, a series of rooms, levels, buildings and labyrinthine arches that he continually added to as money came his way, devising new plans during morning walks with the local builder. \n \n The House of Xavier Corberó , edited by his daughter Ana Corberó, is the first publication to explore this house in Esplugues de Llobregat, which looks set to be sold soon. With original photographs by Daniel Riera, it also contains a series of texts written by long-time friends and colleagues of the artist: architects Ricardo Bofill and Josep Acebillo, World Architecture Festival programme director Paul Finch, artist and journalist Celia Lyttelton, RBTA director Pablo Bofill, and an interview with Corberó himself by filmmaker Albert Moya, originally published in issue 16 of the magazine Apartamento.
