Magazine

The Magazine pairs 100 portrait photographs with 100 abstract paintings across facing pages. Each participant was photographed in everyday clothing of their own choosing; the painting opposite carries only the colours and forms extracted from that outfit. The painting is not a representation of the photograph, and depicts neither face nor body. One layer records what people actually choose to wear day to day. The other records the flat composition that remains once those clothes pass through a single painting system. Neither layer is reducible to the other. Where a fashion editorial constructs model, clothing and setting for the shoot, this book runs the opposite procedure.
