Antipodes
Antipodes
In the mid-16th century, the French adventurer Villegagnon established a colony
on an islet near the Brazilian coast. In order to communicate with the Indians
Tupinambas, he charges Nicolas, a young French Catholic, to teach them
language and to serve as an intermediary. Narrowly escaping the cannibalism of the
Indians thanks to his singing talents, Nicolas gradually integrates into the tribe
: he lives naked, marries an Indian woman named Pepin, and even eats Portuguese! He
especially tries to understand the customs and beliefs of its new
companions. Persecuted from all sides by real and imaginary demons, the
Tupinambas decide to go in search of the "Land without Evil", a mythical country
which should keep them away from misfortune once and for all. But reality will prove
much harder for the Tupinambas, Pépin and Nicolas...
