Apiary - Apiary uses a cinematic lens to uncover the dark underbelly of Lewes, a town in southeast England known for its wild, bacchanalian revelry around Guy Fawkes Night, a quintessentially British holiday celebrating the foiling of an attempted act of extreme political terrorism. Yet Friend's images are far from an exercise in folklore; tight cropping, heightened detail, and a back-and-forth between crowd and individual recall images of riots and political insurrections.

\nApiary is a space of shadow, reflecting a contemporary moment where ideas of democracy, identity and cohesion are pushed to their limits. Friend uses the night as a metaphor to consider the undulating reflections of the unrest, inequality and instability that beset the British Isles.
