                        An unconventional approach
 This volume, which accompanies the exhibition “Art Brut Cuba” organized in Lausanne by
 The Art Brut Collection brings together texts by Cuban authors and
 specialists in the field, as well as reproductions of works and letters
 unpublished works found in the archives of the Collection.
 The exhibition is a dive into the world of Cuban outsider art, more 
forty years after the founding exhibition born from Jean Dubuffet's desire to
 to include works by Cuban artists in the Art Brut Collection
 collected by his friend Samuel Feijóo, who was the curator of the exhibition of
 1983.
 Cuba, because of its insularity, its particular history, its isolation
 political and economic conditions that were imposed on him for a long time, constitute a breeding ground
 fertile ground for creations not influenced by the cultural traditions of the
 outside world.
 The exhibition consists of two sections: the first presents the most
 most emblematic of the Signos group, founded by Feijóo in the late 1960s
 to promote Cuban popular culture through graphic arts;
 second, recent ones, by outsider artists from Studio Riera. Most of the
 The works exhibited are made with natural materials – wood, jute fiber
 – or recovery – packaging cardboard, newspapers, scrap metal, waste
 recycled.
 
These creations reflect the personal experience of their authors,
 their inner worlds, their obsessions, but also the context
 economic, social and political aspects of their country. They give Cuba a vision
 authentic, alternative, far removed from the stereotypes often associated with this
 country.
