Builders
Builders
Photographic story made between 2000 and 2011 in the Indian subcontinent,
BUILDERS is a journey between the past and the present. A lesson in the life of heroes
anonymous. The Indian subcontinent accounts for the largest part of
Humanity (India alone has 1.4 billion inhabitants and the
Bangladesh 171 million, or about 20% of the world's population). We are talking
so about 1/5 of Humanity is in the process of accomplishing the task
forced their industrial revolution. It is important to put a face on
the anonymous heroes who build these great powers in the making (India has
already a GDP higher than that of France). India has often been photographed,
It is important to clarify that Ludovic Vauthier's approach is neither
photojournalism or tourist photography, he asks every time
permissions. “At first glance, there is the (legitimate) mistrust of
managers). But most of the time, when I explained to them the reasons for
my presence, the editorial goal pursued, doubts are lifted and I become
almost Indian, so warm is their welcome. The Builders that I
photographed were also surprised by my presence. Unlike the
Western reluctance (particularly in France), the companions wanted
appear in the photographs, happy to see that their work is finally
recognized. Photography, in most cases, becomes a microphone on the
world. When I was lucky enough to be able to overcome language barriers
and that I was able to discuss with them, I was struck by their common obsessions:
educate their children as best they can and leave them a better world. Their
sacrifice then takes on its full meaning. They never complain.” This project at
was presented in various photo competitions in the 2000s, receiving the
recognition of photographers such as Sebastiao Salgado or Jean Gaumy.
