Following the recent completion of its project Frame, Baukunst announces the release of the eponymous book. Result of an international competition for a “house of media” in Brussels, the project is grounded in a set of fundamental architectural elements—platforms, screen, and service cores—which are deliberately broken down and recomposed in response to a volatile program and a heterogeneous urban environment. The publication retraces the project’s construction chronologically, from 2022 to 2025, under the direction of Baukunst. It features a selection of photographs by Romain Cavallin, accompanied by a series of construction drawings produced throughout the course of the work. Each chapter focuses on a specific constructive layer, highlighting the project’s adaptable nature. A conversation between Adrien Verschuere, founder of Baukunst and professor at Stuttgart University, and Nikolaus Hirsch, artistic director of CIVA Brussels and co-founder of e-flux Architecture, contextualizes the project’s central issues in relation to other ongoing work at the office. Hirsch questions: “Is a house a medium? What is its status, besides the fact that it is a building? Baukunst and their project Frame push the boundary of what you could define as architecture, up to a point where you dissolve architecture itself.” Baukunst is a Brussels-based architecture office founded in 2010. Combining art and technology, and dialoguing with various forms of knowledge, Baukunst is committed to exploring architecture as a medium with which both to think about building (Bau) and build ways of thinking (Kunst). Published by Verlag der Buchhandlung Walther und Franz König. Edited by Baukunst in collaboration with Romain Cavallin. Graphic design by Studio Otamendi.
