Chacarita Moderna. The Brutalist Necropolis of Buenos Aires - In 1949, when
Argentina is among the most powerful countries in the world, the city of Buenos
Aires begins construction of the Sexto Panteón, a 150-hectare underground necropolis
000 graves. This monumental brutalist-style cemetery, which is the first
and the largest experiment in modern architecture applied to the field
funeral, nevertheless remains little known. Ítala Fulvia Villa (1913-1991), his
forgotten architect, was one of the first female architects and urban planners
from Argentina. A pioneer of South American modernism, she contributed in particular to
the development of Le Corbusier's master plan for Buenos Aires. Sixty years
Later, the French architect Léa Namer discovered the Sexto Panteón and made
the name of its designer resurfaces through a long investigation into this cemetery
unique in its kind. This book is a sensitive and committed reflection on
the legacy of a modern utopia as well as a feminist rereading of history.
