BLACK SPRUCE
BLACK SPRUCE
Kuujjuaq, December 18, 1947. Violette, pilot providing airmail service
between Ontario and Nunavik, in the Canadian Far North, is preparing to leave
for his last trip of the season. The weather is clear and nothing leaves
foreshadow the blizzard, which soon descends on the tundra and causes the crash of
her plane. Prisoner of the storm, injured, oscillating between reason and
madness, Violette struggles to survive in a strange between two worlds. But
As a rescue team sets out to search for her, a mysterious
creature, a white bear with a brown-spotted face, seems to have taken care of her...
unless all this is an illusion. Or a delirium. A dream born of agony.
Fascinated by Nordic legends, early stories and ancient cultures,
Aurélie Wilmet takes us in this new work to Inuk territory, at the beginning
of the 20th century, discovering the Inuit of Nunavik and a world still
unexplored. Between an initiatory story and a modern tale, Épinette noire offers a
exploration of the links between the living, humans and non-humans – which leads us to
boundaries of reality. Through flat areas of color, desert and snowy expanses,
Black spruce, ice and torrents make up the landscapes with the presence
disturbing of these powerful pages, tense with the dramatic tension of the story.
A moving journey to the ends of the world, for readers who want to
let yourself be enchanted by the magic of the steppes, in an immersive experience,
sensory and mystical.
