Fear Guards the Lemon Grove - The Sicilian Mafia is probably the most notorious criminal organization in the world. Yet the origins of the Mafia are considered a mystery. Recently, an analysis of two historical datasets on agriculture, social structure, and crime revealed that one of the main catalysts for the rise of the Mafia in Sicily was, somewhat surprisingly, the increase in demand for lemons that began in the first half of the 19th century.

\nKlaus Pichler's book "Fear Guards the Lemon Grove" attempts to reconstruct the rise of the early Cosa Nostra and its connection to the lemon trade. His photographs of sites related to the early Mafia are contrasted with historical images, documents and quotes, arranged as a passage through the various stages of the rise of organized crime in Sicily.
