Filipo de Pisis and Robert Mapplethorpe
Filipo de Pisis and Robert Mapplethorpe
The volume picks up on the unprecedented conversation presented by the Currier Museum
of Art in Manchester among the works of the 20th century Italian painter Filippo
de Pisis (1896-1956) and one of the most influential American art photographers
influential of his generation, Robert Mapplethorpe (1946-1989). Both artists
have never met, but their work reveals striking similarities.
This publication reveals these correspondences for the first time, offering the
public the opportunity to discover the work of one of the most important Italian artists
most prolific of the 20th century and to consider lesser-known photographs of
Mapplethorpe, revisiting his work from a new angle.
