GRAPHIC DESIGN OF SCHELD APEN
GRAPHIC DESIGN OF SCHELD APEN
From 1998 to 2013, a former railway canteen located on the d'Herbouvillekaai
in Antwerp, transformed into a cultural centre by young idealists, thugs and
enthusiasts who called themselves Scheld'apen, welcomed a stream
eclectic of artists, with more than 1300 events over the course of 15 years,
before it was inevitably demolished due to the city's expansion plans.
All these events produced a flow of visual communication, a huge
flow of printed media that has fascinated artists and aficionados of
Scheld'Apen, Benny Van den Meulengracht-Vrancx and Bent Vande Sompele. In
collecting objects and drawing on physical archives already
existing, they decided to put a selection of works into a book:
Graphic Design of Scheld'Apen. “Graphic Design of Scheld’Apen” is the result
of two years of collecting, three archival residencies at Het Bos (the
new headquarters of the still existing Scheld'Apen organization) and a short
digitization residency at the Frans Masereel Centrum. The book contains more than
200 graphic works by different artists, a preface by Pieter Willems and
texts by Roel Griffioen and Pia Jacques. All work was carried out
voluntarily and ordering your book in advance helps
further consolidate its existence. The book launch will take place on
Thursday 18 May at the Royal Academy of Antwerp, accompanied by an exhibition
featuring key works from the archives. You will have the opportunity to
have your book sent to you or pick it up at the launch. The
project is a collaboration between artist Benny Van den Meulengracht-Vrancx,
the musician Bent Vande Sompele, Het Bos and the Royal Academy of Antwerp, under the
direction of Nico Dockx. Graphic Design of Scheld'Apen" is published by Stockmans
Art Books.
