Revelations - Aperture reprints this classic for the 50th anniversary
anniversary of the 1972 posthumous retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art and
the simultaneous publication of Diane Arbus: An Aperture Monograph. \n
\nRevelations explores the origins, scope and aspirations of the voice
completely original from Arbus. The frankness with which Diane Arbus treats her
subjects and his belief in the intrinsic power of the medium produced a body of work
often shocking in its purity, in its unwavering celebration of things
as they are. The presentation of a large number of his photographs
lesser known or unpublished in the context of iconic images reveals a
subtle but persistent vision of the world. \n \nThe book reproduces two hundred
full-page duotones of photographs by Diane Arbus covering her entire
career. It also includes a new contribution from Sarah Meister,
Aperture director, as well as essays by Sandra S. Phillips, curator
at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and a discussion on techniques
Diane Arbus's print by Neil Selkirk, the only person authorized to
print his photographs since his death. A detailed chronology, written
by Elisabeth Sussman, guest curator of the San Francisco exhibition
Museum of Modern Art, and Doon Arbus, the artist's eldest daughter, is pictured
by more than three hundred additional images and composed mainly
excerpts from the artist's letters, notebooks and other writings, which constitute
a kind of autobiography. \n \nA postface by Doon Arbus precedes notices
biographies of the photographer's friends and colleagues, compiled by Jeff L.
Rosenheim, curator in charge of the photography department of the
Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. These texts help to shed light on the
sense of Diane Arbus' controversial and astonishing vision.
