Tamasha
Tamasha
Tamasha follows a group of about a hundred people: the Dalit “families”,
composed of actors performing Tamasha: a form of traveling show
mixing dances, songs and festivities that travels across the state of Maharashtra.
As post-independence India moved away from rural dance forms
and singing, Tamasha has suffered stigma from Indian society.
Khedekar's images explore the complexity of this socio-cultural fabric mixing
skillfully staged, performance, collage, video and sound. This visual bricolage
highlights the resourceful and unpretentious attitude of Tamasha in order to
to make a unique musical aesthetic for the expression of this community.
