À l’école des sentinelles. Re-faire architecture The mid-range mountains are at the forefront of the climate and habitability crisis we are experiencing. Global warming is occurring twice as fast here as anywhere else. The consequences are obvious and implacable: the disappearance of snow and its economic corollary, which undermines the momentum created during the Thirty Glorious Years and the investments made under the snow plans. So what is to be done with the infrastructure and buildings – the ordinary architectural heritage of the 20th century? Are they destined to be abandoned or disappear? This book recounts an experience that is simultaneously educational, human, technical and forward-looking. It’s about the Hôtel des Deux-Sœurs on the Col de l’Arzelier and its possible rehabilitation, dreamt up by a team taking part in the Solar Decathlon Europe 2021-2022 competition. A ‘life-size’, concrete experiment with the support of the Grands Ateliers Innovation Architecture, proving that teaching, research and practice can ‘re-do’ architecture: re-think architectural practice. The Grenoble Ecole Nationale Supérieure d’Architecture and its teachers and researchers have long been committed to an experiential approach to university teaching, transforming territories in crisis into territories of possibilities that ‘just’ have to be invented.
