American Geography – This book marks the culmination of Matt Black’s long-running series, started in 2013. The Magnum photographer has traveled nearly 160,000 km across the United States, drawing up an uncompromising portrait of today’s America, with a particular interest in these outlying cities and the precariousness of daily life, through meticulously composed, powerful B&W images.
What began as a story about isolated communities has become, over the years, a portrait of an increasingly divided country with growing inequalities and disparities. Completed in 2020, after the visit of the last state, this series is accompanied by the artist’s travel notebook where his personal notes and collections of found objects are mixed.
