Chausse-trape – Henri Crabières disguises as farce what is more akin to a painful and violent abstract and chaotic introspection. Self-represented in his main character, he suffers the gratuitous atrocities of two thugs determined to get rich by kidnapping him.
Chausse-trape is a comic strip he produced as part of his diploma at the Arts Décoratifs de Paris, for which he laid down his graphic foundations and narrative obsessions.
In bold, powerful red and black, the author develops a rich, free-flowing graphic vocabulary, alternating between screens, lines, masses and explosive colour. The interactions are heartfelt and spontaneous, as is the unfolding of the story, which has not been altered in any way to retain its freshness, transparency and liveliness. Henri Crabières has taken on the role of true narrator-draughtsman, writing the faces, words, movements and settings with the same line.
