The first comprehensive survey of Smith’s celebrated practice.
Found Ground is the first comprehensive survey of Australian artist Gemma Smith’s practice, incorporating a rigorous and playful approach painting and sculpture. Smith’s free-wheeling painting pushes and pulls at the sheer joy of colour, while her search for understanding goes against the grain of painterly convention. Her crystalline monument-like ‘boulder’ sculptures further express her dynamic colour control. Multi-faceted and multi-coloured, they forge mutating relationships with Smith’s paintings that create new and unexpected correlations.
Found Ground is an immersive experience, providing detailed insight into Smith’s works. A luscious 176 page hardcover volume featuring work from throughout Smith’s career. Informed by Smith’s explorations into colour theory and abstraction, the book’s design features a unique folding-corner hardcover, coloured page edges and special multicoloured pages with folded corners. The volume is also typeset with a custom typeface designed as a response to Smith’s experiments with form and geometry.
