HISTERIA · La trasgresión del deseo – La transgression du désir” (The transgression of desire) traces the influence and interest of the Surrealist movement in reclaiming the imaginary created by Dr. Jean-Martin Charcot in his Iconographie photographique de la Salpêtrière, a series of volumes in which he classified and documented patients at different stages of the disease through photographs.
With a strong male gaze, the Surrealist group used this vision to represent in their art a female body transformed into a consumer product. They created a game of desire and repulsion to showcase the new beauty they themselves had created.
