La constituante –Driven by her “dreamy soul”, Maximilienne hitchhiked to Paris. Thanks to a classified ad, she found a place in a studio not far from the Bastille, already shared by Camille and Charlotte. She intended to devote herself to comics. Life was hard and bread was expensive. But soon, in contact with her companions, exalted and liberated artists, Max discovers the intellectual and political excitement of the capital. Like Charlotte, Paris was angry. The people are roaring. The cahiers de doléance are no longer enough. Comic books by Diderot and Mirabeau are a thing of the past. There’s more and more talk of a certain Marat. At the wheel of their Peugeot 204 or Ami 6, people are smoking cigarettes, talking about freedom of the press, and getting in each other’s faces. We rant and rave. We’ve had it with the little marquises! One day, the crowd takes the Bastille. The National Assembly is formed, Charlotte joins it: history is on the march, and a few anachronisms won’t stop it…
Shy but enamored of freedom and her art, Maximilienne is torn between the calm and delicacy of the luminous aesthete Camille, and the lyrical, generous and violent political passion of the dark Charlotte. What should she do? How to lead her life? Her art? How to steer one’s ship in the midst of all this turmoil? As our friend Olive says, after all, “we’re living in a time when all codes are exploding. In comics too. Am I wrong?”
