Lyon’s artistic production in the 1960s is little known. It was however abundant, rich and varied. Rediscovering the many singular personalities, often self-taught, that the period saw the birth of is the purpose of the exhibition organized in Lyon in the fall of 2019 in the restored premises of the Renaud Foundation, and it is the purpose of this well-documented book whose title, Maudits lyonnais, is a wink to the reputation of the city to have been, for a long time, in the field of the plastic arts, a “cultural desert”, to have held back and assimilated its best sons and daughters and deprived them of a wider fame.
The “Lyon artist” of the sixties often finds very personal ways to exalt his art, original veins, unexploited elsewhere, when he is not downright pioneering. Such is in any case the figure that emerges through the works of some thirty painters that the curator and author has chosen to exhume.
