At the neighborhood level
At the neighborhood level
The notion of "neighborhood" appeared in urban planning discourses at the end of the
19th century and continued to evolve until the mid-20th century. During
This period, four types of neighborhood mark as many moments in the
thinking about the city: from the extension district to the functionalist sector, in
passing through the garden suburb and the neighborhood unit, so many figures which
overlap and reconfigure the face of modern cities. Over the years,
theoretical proposals and realizations, Angelo Bertoni traces a history
non-linear urban planning: by crossing spatial analysis and trajectories
professional authors – mainly architects – there
reconstructs the multiple interlacings, in resonance with the different contexts
political and cultural. This work, rich in archival iconography
often unpublished, puts into perspective the contemporary approach to the notion of "
neighborhood”, which designates both a scale of analysis and a scale of project,
as well as its value as an essential lever in the implementation of
urban and territorial visions. Preface by Frédéric Pousin
