In 1943, the Villa Aurora in Los Angeles became such a refuge for Marta and Lion Feuchtwanger. To mark his twenty-fifth anniversary as Artists' residence, the Villa presents reflections from writers and artists visuals on sanctuaries and hermitages. In addition to new essays and poems former scholarship holders, the publication also includes literary essays on the literature of exile as well as views and texts from the exhibition All the Lonely People, curated by Nana Bahlmann. \nThe book examines the millennial tradition of hermitism and, against the backdrop of the Covid pandemic, offers artistic representations of solitude, melancholy and nostalgia as well as physical and mental withdrawal. \n \nThe Villa Aurora & Thomas Mann House is hosting two residencies in Los Angeles to encourage Transatlantic dialogue and commemorating people exiled in California during the Nazi era. \n \nWith works by: Saâdane Afif, Vajiko Chachkhiani, Louisa Clement, Lauren Halsey, Johnston Marklee, Annika Kahrs, Susan Philipsz, Anri Sala, April Street, Thomas Struth, Kaari Upson and Andrea Zittel.
