  • Started in 2013 with the intention of photographing the contemporary reality of United States, the American Geography series takes as its starting point the areas rural and isolated areas of California's Central Valley. The photographer represented by the Magnum Photos agency then sets out on a journey which will take him across all the states of the country, covering nearly 160,000 km in encounter traces of growing and hidden poverty. At the meeting also of those people who do not exist in the image of an America modern and media. What had started as a story of communities individual and isolated has become the portrait of an increasingly divided country and unequal, created in a time of growing disparity and disunity. Completed in 2020 after the last state visit, the images are accompanied by the notebook travel journal of the artist, thus mixing his personal notes with collections of found objects. Published for the first time in French, this series focuses on poverty farming communities and the isolation of rural America. In a style documentary with intense black and whites, the photographer immerses us in a harsh but very real world.
