BANK TOP is a collaboration with writer, poet and social researcher Abdul
Aziz Hafiz, examining the representation and misrepresentation of
northern communities. The work focuses on a small, close-knit community in
Blackburn, England, a town that has become synonymous with the use of
words like segregation (BBC Panorama described it as "the most segregated city
segregated Britain") and integration (Casey Review to the
British government). The portraits in this book were all taken in
an area of less than half a square mile in 2019 and 2020. The work is a
response and challenge to Blackburn's media label as 'the
most segregated in Britain." Hafiz writes: "Work is a response to
This simplistic representation and the ruthless use of language by the
policy makers and the media when trying to explain the challenges
facing these neighborhoods and cities and resets
the experience of these communities in the context of government industry.
