Beirut, despite everything
Corruption, economic collapse and revolution: the story of a Lebanon in search
of a better future.
This album traces the story of Robert Sacy, a Lebanese doctor.
The 73-year-old doctor has had an eventful life, just like Lebanon. He has
went through the Lebanese civil war (1975-1990) and the reconstruction of the years
1990-2000. For more justice
social in a country where inequalities are the rule, he creates the first service
public pediatrician in Beirut in 2016. He then took part in the uprisings
popular of 2019 alongside the youth of the country with great hope, then
saw its hospital destroyed by the explosion at the port of Beirut in 2020. It was
On this tragic occasion we met Dr. Sacy, haggard, in
the ruins of his hospital blown up by the explosion. From this meeting was born
a report for Arte, Lebanon: in the chaos of hospitals (nominated at the Festival
International Major Current Affairs Reporting – FIGRA). Since then, the doctor has
raised. He now faces the country's economic collapse and the specter
of the return of war since October 2023.
Through the story of Robert Sacy, told by Sophie Guignon and Chloé Domat,
correspondents in Lebanon and illustrated by Kamal Hakim, Lebanese cartoonist, this
album is a window to understand contemporary Lebanon. Between commitment,
fight and hope for a more lenient future.
