Brutalism in Belgium
Brutalism in Belgium
Brutalism in Belgium is an editorial project highlighting the main
Brutalist buildings in Belgium, erected in the 1950s-1980s. These
Belgian architectural achievements are at a crucial crossroads in their
existence: threatened with demolition, transformed or simply abandoned.
The book lists more than 50 constructions, located in Brussels, Liège, Namur,
Antwerp, Ghent, Louvain-la-Neuve, Leuven, Turnhout, Charleroi, Mons, Hasselt,
Dilbeek, Harelbeke and Oostende, whose fate is at stake today. Each
building is captured with a technical camera in film photography
large black and white format, using a rigorous method allowing
the homogeneity of the shots. Each negative is then developed and digitized
by the author so as to maintain control of the method until the result
final. All the buildings previously selected are immortalized via 6
frontal or focused shots. The shots are accompanied by texts
descriptions, written by Aurélien Jacob and Pierrick de Stexhe, covering the
main architectural and urban characteristics of the buildings. The
The book considers brutalism according to three major themes: 1. Images and
magic of concrete by Jacinthe Gigou 2. Genealogy of international brutalism
Brutalism Timeline by Jean-Marc Basyn 3. Materiality by Marc Dubois
