FARMER CUBA
Photographer Richard Sharum traveled across Cuba to document life
of isolated farmers, or "campesinos" and their wider communities
a time of national transition. The stories of these communities have shaped
the backbone of Cuba and yet they are rarely represented in the
photographic representations of the country. Sharum began to make
research on peasant communities at the end of 2015 and its
The resulting black and white photographs illustrate the relationship
intertwined with people and the land they depend on. Campesino Cuba, documents
Sharum's travels across the country's northern and southern coasts, its provinces
western and its eastern villages in the heart of the mountain ranges of the
Sierra Maestra. As the recent demonstrations have demonstrated
anti-government, Cuba is a nation in radical transformation, with
deep-rooted social and racial divisions. Sharum has diverted his
objective of metropolitan policy, focusing instead on life
usually invisible from "campesino", which translates to "peasant" or "
farmer ".
