That's how it is
That's how it is
In Tokyo, the buildings are erect penises reaching towards a sky where they fly
cock planes. Men and women have a head shaped like an acorn, and they have orgies
late at night after the office day. That's how it is. In the baths
mixed audiences, the guys cheat boredom by threading funny beads in
funny places… Au pairs leave baby and household chores to
to engage in the crudest acts among themselves. That's how it is. Chinkoman,
the "dick-man" uses his oversized organ to violently impose his law
phallic. That's how it is! That's how it is!
This is how it is: the society described in these nine short stories by Jirô
Ishikawa is placed under the sign of the king-phallus, of the sexual drive, of the
narcissism, of libidinous obsession. It is the society of pleasure-seekers, of
neurotic satisfied, the society of the head of knots. With an elegant stroke capable
to embrace all registers, from minimal to psychedelic, including
codes of gekiga, Jirô Ishikawa, virtuoso mangaka and outcast, describes this world as
that he sees it, as he dreams it or, more surely, as he fears it.
Almost unknown in his country, Ishikawa is a decadent, delirious, out-of-touch author
that no one dared to wait for. He is here, that's how it is now.
