Cramp in the heart
Cramp in the heart
Breaking with the Academy and seemingly indifferent to theories, Egon Schiele
(1890-1918) was and remains one of the major artists of the turn of the century.
And the proclamation of the ephemeral group of artists that he founded with a few friends
best reveals his position: There is no new art, there are new
artists […] the new artist must necessarily be himself, he must be
creator and must, without intermediary, without resorting to the heritage of the past,
build, absolutely alone, the foundations. In less than ten years, Egon
Schiele would produce nearly 3,000 works on paper and some 300 paintings.
During this period of intense activity, Egon Schiele was not content with the
only field of art: he also wrote. All the texts of the writer Schiele
(excluding correspondence) have been collected here, in a new translation, of which
two unpublished works in French: Am 18. August 1912 and Die Kunst-der Neukünstler.
Thus, any reader will be able to discover, through this other means, the immense talent
of this outstanding artist.
