What is Garamond the name of?

The surname of the French typographer Claude Garamond (c. 1510–1561) is today attached to several dozen digital typographic characters yet very different in appearance. From the Renaissance to the contemporary era, This work aims to describe and explain the sources of what is needed well call the "Garamond imbroglio", within which the prestige of the name seems have long since replaced knowledge of forms.
