DOMINOES
DOMINOES
Dominoes is a unique and vibrant mosaic of the lives that float in and
around a particular corner of Hackney, in the East End of London. The book
is populated with intimate photos of people who have experienced addiction and
pain, but also the deep joys of the community of which they are a part.
Gillett Square has been left abandoned and underdeveloped for years
until, in the 1990s, it became an experiment in regeneration
urban. Just like the dominoes games that are played today on the
place, these lives are often precarious. Roland Ramanan is a photographer
London-based documentary filmmaker with a background in music and education. He has
started photographing around Gillett Square in 2012 and continues to
maintain contact with this community. His work has been published in the
Vice magazine, among others, and has won several awards, including being
shortlisted for the Royal Photographic Society documentary awards. Roland has
was also a finalist for the Portrait of Britain award. Roland's current project
focuses on the London roller skate scene and its relationship with the
black culture. The book includes texts by Richard Yeboa and Roland Ramanan
as well as a poem by Ian McMillan.
