In Praise of Marcel Broodthaers
In Praise of Marcel Broodthaers
"With the plastic arts, I could only engage in enemy territory," he said.
Marcel Broodthaers. What is the meaning of this commitment? What is at stake in the
fight that leads him to the painful decision to leave the field of
poetic writing? His multifaceted work thwarts interpretations. Several
threads are woven there, according to an original logic that this Eulogy deploys. The
essential references are Mallarmé, whom he considers to be "the inventor of
"modern space", Magritte, to whom he credits a "tightening of the
notion of subject" and Lacan, for whom "truth has the structure of fiction". A
poetics of the object and the absence of object is deduced from this, as well as a practice
ironic of the ambiguities of communication. The figure of an artist is drawn there
great, which we have not finished discovering.
