  • Francesca Woodman and Julia Margaret Cameron: Portraits to Dream In - Alive and Working over a century apart, British photographer Julia Margaret Cameron and American photographer Francesca Woodman experimented very different ways of creating and understanding images. Yet, the two share more similarities than expected. The two artists had a brief career of less than 15 years; although neither enjoyed the popularity and success during their lifetime, they were posthumously awarded widespread praise. Their portraits exhibit ethereal qualities and experimental ones that firmly connect them through time. \n \nThe catalog beautifully illustrated, accompanying the exhibition of the same name at the National Portrait Gallery in London, includes the most famous photographs of Woodman and Cameron as well as less familiar images. The book begins with three essays that consider Cameron and Woodman simultaneously and go to 10 thematic sections interspersed with works by both artists. Portraits to Dream New connections are made between the work of two innovative photographers who push the boundaries of the photographic medium and experiment with ideas of beauty, symbolism, transformation and storytelling to produce certain of the most fascinating and admired images in the history of art; edited by Magdalene Keaney, with essays by Katarina Jerinic and Helen Ennis. \n \nPublished on the occasion of the exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery of London (United Kingdom) from March 21 to June 16, 2024 and at the Valencià Institute of Art Modern IVAM in Valencia (Spain) from July 11 to October 20, 2024.
