FRANS MASEREEL, THE WORLD'S FOOTPRINT

The most comprehensive monograph on the work of Frans Masereel ever published. The engravings reproduced here were found in collections throughout Europe, museums or private collections, mainly in Germany, Belgium and France. Contributions from Samuel Dégardin and Joris van Parys, specialist and biographer of Masereel, complete a series of texts and images often unpublished: rare photographs of Masereel with Stefan Zweig, Romain Rolland, George Grosz..., original woodcuts, reputed to be lost, unpublished interviews with are editor, Pierre Vorms, a great figure of the resistance. With his wordless novels, Frans Masereel is today considered one of the precursors of the modern graphic novel. Quite quickly, the influence of Masereel will go beyond the borders of Europe and win over the great engravers Americans such as Lynd Ward (Wild Pilgrimage, 1932). Then, with the revival of comics and the appearance of the graphic novel, it is rediscovered by Art Spiegelman (Maus, 1986) and Eric Drooker (Flood!, 1992) who signs the preface to this monograph. Frans Masereel cultivated the friendship of writers such as Romain Rolland and Stefan Zweig, his two great companions in the fight against war, but also Alfred Döblin, Pierre Jean Jouve, Thomas Mann and Hermann Hesse who will preface his works.
