This publication consists of all the slides of Frido Troost
(1960-2013) used for his courses at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie. Troost,
an art historian by trade, was a pioneer in the collection of
photographs of all kinds. In his shop "Institute for Concrete
Matter", many types of photography were represented, ranging from
from guereotypes to albumen prints, from stereo photographs to family albums.
The images presented in this book come from all sorts of sources:
paintings, advertisements, eroticism, art objects, portraits, etc. They form a
new collection that represents the associative view of Frido Troosts. The
slides are presented in blocks of nine, in the same construction as
the one that Frido Troost gave to his classes, a non-hierarchical set-up
which invites the viewer to freely connect the images. A controversial mix
which covers a large part of the history of photography.
