is not, in collaboration with Valentine Gallardo. She returns alone
Today, without completely leaving the world of childhood, with Funky Town,
and thus confirms the full extent of his talent. Funky Town reads like a tale
modern – and like all tales, lend themselves to several levels of reading –
where we follow young Lele, a lonely child and budding writer, who each
day goes into the forest to visit the mysterious Baba Yaga, and
then bring back a vital potion to her dear and imposing mother. In doing so, she
cross the streets of Funky Town, an astonishing city whose inhabitants seem
doomed to chaotic hedonism. Little by little, it appears that Lele could
living in the most complete of lies. Evoking folklore and tales
Russians as a source of inspiration, but also Walthéry, Mœbius, the King and
The Bird or Ghost in the Shell, Mathilde Van Gheluwe fires everything
wood to create a work with a thousand facets, by turns funny and cruel,
disturbing and tender, but above all beautiful, in its ambitions as well as its
realization.
