  • An electrifying tribute to the unique journey of Gladys Nilsson, a pioneer of Hairy Who current. Spanning five decades and featuring 100 plates in color, this magnificent volume is the most complete monograph to date of Chicago painter Gladys Nilsson (born 1940). Although Nilsson is more known for her watercolors, which she began exhibiting in the mid-1960s. and as an original member of the Hairy Who, she devoted much of her time of his career in acrylic painting. This monograph begins with his paintings on panel and plexiglass from the 1960s, then examines his paintings on canvas from the 1970s, including the very large work Dipped Dick: Adam and Eve after Cranach after Cranach, where the title characters are surrounded by a menagerie of cavernous plants and animals. The book ends with its recent paintings, very lively, which are full of characters. As described Nilsson, "I draw a big character, but this character always needs of another character, and these two characters need a third to interact. And then, before I know it, the whole space is teeming.”
