Hometown brings together a series of photographs of suburban landscapes taken in
Long Island between 1973-1980 by Joseph Szabo. Sharing the same DNA as his
Teenage and Almost Grown series, Szabo's Hometown images evoke a
instant nostalgia, recalling fond memories of childhood and
Szabo's adolescence in the suburbs. Szabo explains: "The scenes in Hometown
remind me of places I knew from my youth, places that
I saw them on the way to school, church or the museum. They touched a
sensitive chord in me, a chord that is difficult to put into words but which revealed
their connection to my own past. In that sense, Hometown is autobiographical.”
Building on his past work, Hometown provides context for the lives of
suburbs that Szabo documented so effectively for nearly forty years.
