Against a backdrop of football and cinema, a beautiful story of resistance in the
Brazil 1950s. São Paulo, Brazil, 1950. Preparations for the World Cup
World Cup football is in full swing, the first time since the war. Vera and Luiz
live peaceful days with their father Jorge, a railway worker. Young Luiz shares
his time between school, football, the cinema which he loves, and his friend Mario,
a young baker who emigrated from Italy to Brazil, like many others since the end
of the war and the liberation of fascist Italy. But a terrible accident
comes to turn their lives upside down: Jorge, the father, is knocked down and killed by the
train derailment. Investigation reveals that a lack of maintenance of the rails is
at the origin of the accident. As a sign of protest, the railway workers decided to
stop work, but the company that employs them sends strike breakers
violently suppress this protest movement. For their part, the children of
Jorge suffers intimidation and threats... A simple and beautiful story of
resistance and struggle, of the poor against the rich, of the weak against the powerful.
Andrea Campanella has produced a generous and sensitive scenario, which the line
Anthony Mazza's Claire serves wonderfully. A beautiful homage to neorealist films
of the time...
