  • An innovative retrospective look at the work of one of the most emblematic of America, using the concepts of mirroring and doubling, which have long preoccupied Johns Jasper Johns (born 1930) is arguably the artist most influential person alive today. Over the past 65 years, he has produces a radical and varied work marked by constant reinvention. Inspired by the artist's long-standing fascination with the mirror and doubles, this book offers an original and exciting perspective on work Johns and its continued relevance. A diverse group of curators, of academics, artists and writers offers a series of essays, including including numerous paired texts, which examine aspects of the work of the artist, such as recurring motifs, explorations of places and the use of a wide range of media. These include Carroll Dunham on Nightmares, Ruth Fine on monotypes and working proofs, Michio Hayashi on Japan, Terrance Hayes on flags and Colm Toibín on dreams, among others. The different themes are explored in depth in a series of in-depth plate sections that combine engravings, drawings, paintings and sculptures to establish new connections in the vast Johns production. Accompanying “mirror” exhibitions held simultaneously at the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Philadelphia Museum of Art, this richly illustrated volume presents a selection of rarely seen works published as well as unpublished archives and full of revelations which allow you to engage with and understand the artist's rich and varied work in a new and meaningful way.
