Like a logbook, this Journal shows the working method
and sources of inspiration of Jochen Gerner. The daily work of
A designer requires learning to look before being able to create. He is led to
to feel reality and to interpret the things seen, in order to transcribe
graphically his own perceptions. In this book, Jochen Gerner returns to
four years of observation and image creation. He details his process
work allowing him to publish press cartoons every week,
create illustrated books or exhibitions. Drawing is seen as a
reservoir of frames, pictograms, and is available through the principle of
ink covering on a multitude of printed media to study them
the details. This permanent pairing of writing and image and this inspiration
daily reality prompted Jochen Gerner to transcribe its effects,
thread of the days, without any particular regularity. Dust or
meteors, observations of sandfall from the Sahara or hailstone clusters,
reflections on the representation of beings and things, study of forms
abstract or insect wanderings, analysis of the curves of a staircase
helical or sectional thermal power stations: each of these situations or
micro-events occurring in everyday life therefore feed
the inspiration of the illustrator and is transcribed here, in words and images.
This representation of the world through drawing confronts the minuscule and the
gigantic, to the private sphere and to wars, to everyday accidents and to
the global pandemic.
