THE ATTRACTION OF JOAN OF ARC
THE ATTRACTION OF JOAN OF ARC
Silent presence from the origins of cinematography - views of Lumière or films of
Méliès - and in the early historical epics of Cecil B. DeMille, Joan has
almost spoke French with Dreyer in what would have been the first film
speaking. But it was the Nazis who stole his words, before Hollywood
seizes his warrior legend, where Rossellini took him to Italy in a
whirlwind of light. First Preminger, then Bresson who finally gave him his words
in his language, founded the insolence of the new European cinema. Then
Jeanne becomes the obligatory passage of modern authors, whether it is the Soviet
Panfilov, or the French Alain Cavalier, Jacques Rivette, Marcel Hanoun and
Bruno Dumont. Joan of Arc on screen, that is to say the story and legend of
all our cinema.
