In 2017, Antoine de Galbert donated his collection of headdresses to the museum
des Confluences, in Lyon. Considering his relationship with headdresses as "instinctive,
"playful and spontaneous", they tell the story of societies and aesthetics
diverse and amazing from around the world.
Thus, from one continent to another, this richly illustrated catalogue takes the
reader to discover more than five hundred headdresses, symbols of the cultures of
world. This work invites contemplation and study of the headdress, its
aesthetics, its materials, but also the role, status and nature of this
special project offers to each of its holders. Varied, astonishing,
spectacular, the headdresses are revealed and arouse curiosity about their
real functions…
This catalog offers a dual approach: that of the collector nourished by the
beauty, strangeness, exoticism of these adornments and that of the museum which is
focuses on the history, the people, the reality of the use for
understand these objects in their living context.
