LIKE A BIRD
LIKE A BIRD
German photographer Johanna-Maria Fritz travels the world to
photographing people and communities, especially in areas of
Middle East War. This book is the second in a poignant series on the
circus in Muslim countries. She started this series more than five years ago
years and published this work in his 2017 book, Like a Bird. Circus continues
this project with images taken between 2017 and today. His work will be
exhibited this summer at the annual photography festival in Arles. "For Like a Bird,
I have traveled to many Islamic countries. I was particularly curious
of the role of women in circus life and the environment in which the
circus is based - fortunately, I was able to access female culture in
conservative societies like Iran and Afghanistan because I myself am a
woman. With my work, I pursue the goal of overcoming prejudices and
to show how small communities are able to function in these
conservative or conflict-ridden countries. I guide a viewer's gaze
towards different worlds: that of the circus as well as the society which surrounds it and
how the social fabric of the circus influences the outside and influences itself
upside down." - Johanna-Maria Fritz Text in English and Arabic.
