  • LIVING ABSTRACTION \n \nSophie Taeuber-Arp (1889-1943) was one of the artists most versatile modern artists, creating deeply innovative works in many disciplines. This exhibition traces the trajectory of his career: professor of applied arts, participant in the Dada movement and manufacturer of textiles and objects, to designer of murals, stained glass, furniture, interiors and buildings, through painter-sculptor, magazine editor and pioneer of abstraction geometric. For Taeuber-Arp, abstraction was always linked to a reality daily life in which the objects had to be used and handled, the spaces had to be moved and artworks had to be looked at and experienced. Their creations respond to their time and place of achievement, in accordance with the ambition expressed by Taeuber-Arp to create "living things" in "a new style that suits us". His movement fluid between genres, disciplines and creative roles makes it particularly relevant for contemporary artists, while its work proposes a more open and inclusive way of thinking about the history of modern art. \n \nSophie Taeuber-Arp: Living Abstraction is the first exhibition in the United States for nearly 40 years to trace the entirety of the the artist's multifaceted career. It features some 400 works, including textiles, applied arts, puppets, drawings interior and architecture, furniture, paintings and sculptures in relief, works on paper, photographs and a selection of prints. The exhibition aims to deepen our understanding of abstraction Taeuber-Arp's own and to explore the different ways in which his work has challenged the boundaries separating fine art from craft and design.
