Lord of Things
Lord of Things
Michel Medinger - Lord of Things offers a parallel exploration of the work
unknown by the Luxembourg photographer Michel Medinger and his house, filled
of collections of objects that populate each of his photographs. At the heart of
his surrealist and baroque work, his still lifes photographed over 30
years take on a theatrical dimension where, with subversive humor, life and
death meet. This book accompanies the exhibition Michel Medinger - Lord of
Things presented at the Rencontres d'Arles 2024 and in Luxembourg. Born in 1941 at
Luxembourg, Michel Medinger was first passionate about painting, before moving on to
devote himself to photography from the 1960s. He began as
photojournalist for the Luxembourg Athletics Federation, himself having
participated in the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo. Working for the laboratories
of the Luxembourg State, he puts his extensive knowledge of chemistry to good use
to experiment with multiple photographic processes. His artistic practice
asserted itself in the 1980s and constituted a body of remarkable works,
both by his perfect mastery of techniques and by the singularity of his
very neat compositions. Exhibited in Luxembourg, France, the United States,
In China and Japan, his photographs are part of collections
private and public, Luxembourgish and international.
